NRB expands deposit options

Nepal Rastra Bank ( NRB ) has allowed branches of commercial banks to deposit cash and make transfers and withdrawals also from banks where it has maintained a note fund, said the central bank Sunday. Earlier, this could be done only from the central bank’s offices.

NRB issued the new rule due to the risk of robbery of cash being transported over long routes. The central bank’s move has come a week after Rs 23.1 million of Nabil Bank was looted from a vehicle near the Manohara bridge on the border between Kailali and Kanchanpur districts in far western Nepal.

The vehicle was transporting the money from Nabil’s Mahendranagar branch to Nepal Rastra Bank’s Dhangadhi branch. “The latest directive was issued after transporting cash over long distances became risky,” said a central bank official.

The Central Bureau of Investigation of Police has launched an investigation into the robbery near the Manohara bridge. Meanwhile, Rs 1 million was robbed from Alpine Development Bank in Hetauda, Makwanpur on Sunday while it was preparing to transport the money to its branch office in Chhatiwan VDC.
