Proparco Group , a French Development Financial Institution, has shown its interest to make an investment in Nepal, particularly in the agriculture, sustainable tourism, education, micro financing and energy sector.
The Proparco group is a financing and investment group originating in France and based in India. This group finances and invests partly in equity in the development projects mainly in the areas of energy, tourism, agriculture and health in the developing countries. They have been involved in many projects with public and private sectors partners in India and South Asian countries since 2008.
Addressing an event organised by Franco-Nepalese Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the Capital on Saturday, Cedric Joutet, investment officer at Proparco, said that the company which is dedicated to finance the private sector, will be making debt and equity investment .
“We feel that this is the right time to make an entry in Nepal. Our objective is to finance the private sector companies that can fulfil Proparco’s environmental and social requirements,” Joutet said, adding that the company can make debt investment of $35 million to $ 100 million and equity investment of $ 3 million to 10 million.
Though the company has interest in multiple sectors, it is more interested in making investment in energy and agriculture sector of the country.
Speaking during the event, Shyam Mohan Shrestha, president of Franco Nepalese Chamber of Commerce and Industry indicated that the foray of Proparco in Nepal would strengthen the diplomatic ties of Nepal and France.
During the event, a wide section of business personalities from Nepal and senior bureaucrats put forth their investment perspective. Hotelier Karna Shakya said that agro-based tourism has “immense potentials” in the country. “Nepal has such rich biodiversity which allows cultivation of different kinds of agro products. And this can also turn into an attraction for the tourists,” Shakya said.
Ram Prasad Dhital, executive director of Alternative Energy Promotion Centre (AEPC), urged the French investor to participate in the development of alternative energy resources in Nepal. According to him, the government has a programme designed for rural parts of the country, where Proparco can explore the area’s potential by partnering with the local developers.
Similarly, Energy expert Gyanendra Lal Pradhan said that the growing ties between Nepal and India, especially in the energy sector, has added more scope for the development of hydropower in the country.
Kalika Construction Group Director Padam Gurung urged the French investors to join hands to ensure the development of several infrastructure projects in the country. “Nepal is a virgin land for investment . Since it is difficult for banks in Nepal to make a huge investment , we are looking forward to partner with companies like Proparco to make an investment in infrastructure development,” Gurung said.
The company has made a commitment of Rs 552 million in the South Asian region. Its largest commitment lies in India, followed by Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
