'Debit card holders need to take precautions to protect their cash'

Police have arrested two members of an ATM card fraud racket, who were accused of being involved in duplicating debit cards and withdrawing hefty amounts from the bank accounts of genuine depositors.

The detainees are Bhushan Pandey, 30, and Dilip Kumar Yadav, 22, of Bihar, India, currently residing in Birgunj.

Pandey used to work as a computer operator at a pharmacy in Birgunj, while Yadav had recently come to Nepal after completing BSc in his home state.

Acting on intelligence supplied by some banks in Kathmandu, an undercover team from Metropolitan Police Crime Division arrested them in Birgunj yesterday and brought them to Kathmandu to proceed with further investigation and legal action.

The duo would steal ATM card information and PIN code of respective account holders on some pretext and use them to prepare duplicate debit cards to withdraw  cash from ATM booths in Birgunj and Pokhara.

“They would enter ATM booths to steal the PIN code of genuine card holders, pretending not to know how to enter their password. They were also found to be withdrawing money from the accounts of other depositors by hacking online banking system,” an official said.

Police have not provided details about the cash that they managed to withdraw through ATM cards and online banking. However, they have been charged under the Electronic Transaction Act, 2008 and Banking Offence and Punishment Act, 2008.

Officials informed that Pandey and Yadav had been sent to Metropolitan Police Range, Teku, for legal proceedings.

Police suggested that such type of crime could be easily prevented by taking some precautionary measures, while appealing to all ATM users not to be careless with their ATM card details.
