Gold, silver record substantial gains

Gold and silver became dearer in the week as their price shot up by Rs 2,300 and Rs 15 per tola from August 16 to 21. This is the highest weekly price rise of the yellow metal so far this year.

Market opened on Sunday with gold price fixed at Rs 49,300 per tola and its price remained stable on Monday. On Tuesday, gold price edged up by Rs 400 per tola to be fixed at Rs 49,700 a tola. It remained unchanged on Wednesday.

Price of goldagain rose by Rs 500 per tola on Thursday to Rs 50,200. Its price surged by Rs 1,400 per tola  in a single day on Friday to close the week’s trading at Rs 51,600 a tola. The last time gold was traded at a similar level was on June 23, when its price was Rs 51,800 a tola.

Gold price started to rise in the international market after the devaluation of the Chinese currency, as Chinese investors increased investment in gold considering it a safe haven.

Similarly, silver price also rose by Rs 15 a tola over the week. The market opened on Sunday with silver price fixed at Rs 700 per tola and it remained stable till Tuesday.

Price of silverhowever, slumped by Rs 10 per tola on Wednesday. On Thursday, silver price rose by Rs 15 a tola in a single day to be traded at Rs 705 per tola. Similarly, silver price rose by Rs 10 per tola on Friday to be fixed at Rs 715 a tola.
